NFLSU Weekend Report: Burrow and Chase Deliver, Jefferson Wins and LSU Defenders Make Their Mark

Joe Burrow throwing touchdowns to Ja’Marr Chase still looks familiar to LSU fans. Different uniforms, different stadium, same connection—and on Sunday, it helped Cincinnati leave Houston with a victory.

The Bengals’ former Tigers headline this week’s NFLSU roundup, which also includes Justin Jefferson’s contribution to a Minnesota win, productive defensive performances and an injury-shortened afternoon for Jayden Daniels.

This report covers NFL Week 2 games completed through Sunday, September 20, including Thursday’s game. Players included finished their college careers at LSU before entering the NFL through the draft or undrafted free agency. Monday night’s Giants–Rams game remains outside these results.

Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase: Two touchdowns, one familiar connection

Burrow completed 20 of 31 passes for 207 yards and two touchdowns in Cincinnati’s 20–6 victory over Houston. Both touchdown passes went to Chase, who finished with seven receptions for 75 yards and two scores.

Chase’s first touchdown was the highlight: a 32-yard reception on which he fought through coverage from another former Tiger, Derek Stingley Jr., and adjusted his body to make the catch near the front pylon. He later added an 18-yard touchdown reception.

The Bengals improved to 2–0, with their LSU connection accounting for both of the team’s touchdowns. For Tigers fans, that was the weekend’s clearest example of familiar college chemistry continuing to produce NFL results.

Justin Jefferson: A useful contribution in a defensive struggle

Jefferson caught three passes for 55 yards, including a 30-yard reception, as Minnesota defeated Chicago, 9–3.

This was not a game built around touchdown celebrations or huge passing totals. Neither team reached the end zone, making Jefferson’s ability to generate yardage valuable in a contest decided entirely by field goals.

His numbers were modest by his own standards, but the Vikings left with the win. Jefferson’s longest reception accounted for more than half of his receiving yardage.

Jayden Daniels: Productive running before an injury ended his afternoon

Daniels completed 11 of 17 passes for 96 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions before leaving Washington’s 37–20 loss to Dallas. He also rushed seven times for 69 yards, showing the mobility that makes him such a difficult quarterback to contain.

The concern afterward went well beyond the box score. Daniels injured his left elbow on the final play of the first half and did not return.

According to the Associated Press, Commanders coach Dan Quinn said imaging showed a dislocation but no fracture, with additional testing planned for Monday. That report did not establish a return date.

For LSU fans following their former quarterback, his health is the immediate priority. His rushing production had been a significant part of Washington’s offense before the injury.

Brian Thomas Jr.: Three catches in Jacksonville’s loss

Thomas finished with three receptions for 40 yards, including a 22-yard catch, in Jacksonville’s 20–13 loss at Denver. He did not score a touchdown.

It was a quieter afternoon than the explosive performances LSU fans know he can deliver. Still, the 22-yard reception supplied a downfield gain in a game Jacksonville lost by one score.

Grant Delpit: A sack in Cleveland’s victory

Delpit recorded five tackles, all solo, and one sack as Cleveland defeated Tampa Bay, 23–19.

The Browns credited him with their first sack of the game after he forced Baker Mayfield out of bounds at the line of scrimmage late in the opening quarter. Cleveland finished with three sacks overall.

Delpit’s combination of tackling and pressure gave LSU fans a defensive performance worth recognizing. His contribution came in a four-point win in which keeping Tampa Bay out of the end zone late proved essential.

Patrick Queen and Danielle Hunter add defensive highlights

Queen intercepted a pass and returned it three yards during Pittsburgh’s 20–3 loss at New England. He also registered two assisted tackles and was credited with a pass defended.

Hunter recorded one sack and one pass defended for Houston against Cincinnati. His sack supplied a productive moment for the Texans even as Burrow and Chase controlled the scoring story.

Neither player’s team won, but both produced the kinds of individual plays that belong in a performance roundup rather than being lost behind the final score.

Will Campbell contributes up front

Campbell played left tackle in New England’s 20–3 victory over Pittsburgh. On TreVeyon Henderson’s 39-yard touchdown run, reporting from Boston.com identified Campbell among the blockers who helped create the opening.

That provides a specific contribution to recognize without inventing a blocking grade or assigning every offensive success to one lineman. Offensive linemen rarely receive the statistical spotlight enjoyed by quarterbacks and receivers, but their work helps produce those numbers.

The undrafted Tigers belong in the conversation, too

Reid Ferguson appeared for Buffalo in Thursday’s 41–31 victory over Detroit. The Bills’ long snapper entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent from LSU in 2016.

His role is a reminder that LSU’s NFL presence extends beyond first-round selections and fantasy football stars. Long snappers contribute to the kicking operation, even when their game logs contain little beyond participation.

Another undrafted Tiger, Rams linebacker Omar Speights, belongs in this coverage going forward. Los Angeles signed him out of LSU in 2024, but the Rams’ Week 2 matchup with the Giants is scheduled for Monday night.

Malik Nabers and Odell Beckham Jr., listed with the Giants on LSU’s current NFL roster page, do not yet have Week 2 performances to include in this weekend recap.

Through Sunday, Burrow and Chase supplied the biggest highlight. Jefferson contributed to another victory, Delpit delivered a sack in a close win, and several other Tigers added catches, tackles and turnovers across the league.
