Lane Kiffin’s first game as LSU’s head coach will come against a Clemson team with enough talent to make Saturday night interesting.

But when the matchup is broken down, LSU has the advantages that matter most.

The Tigers have the more experienced quarterback, the home field advantage, a dangerous pass rush facing a rebuilt Clemson offensive line and an LSU offense that Clemson has had difficulty preparing for because of the massive roster and coaching turnover in Baton Rouge.

The betting market has LSU favored by roughly 10 to 10.5 points, depending on the sportsbook. CBS Sports listed LSU around minus 10 Thursday, while Clemson focused reports listed the visiting Tigers as a 10.5 point underdog. Betting lines can move before kickoff. 

I still like LSU to cover.

Prediction: LSU 31, Clemson 17.

Sam Leavitt Gives LSU a Major Advantage at Quarterback

Sam Leavitt will be making his LSU debut, but he is not an inexperienced quarterback.

Leavitt has played in 24 college games and started 20 at Arizona State. He went 16 and 4 as the Sun Devils’ starter, including 11 and 2 in his starts during Arizona State’s 2024 Big 12 championship and College Football Playoff season.

For his career, Leavitt has completed 376 of 612 passes for 4,652 yards and 36 touchdowns. He has also rushed for 816 yards and 10 scores. 

Kiffin has been pleased with what he has seen during LSU’s preparation for Clemson. He said this week that Leavitt had a “great camp,” while also saying LSU’s running game has looked good and the running backs have improved significantly. Kiffin’s concern has been making enough plays around Leavitt and protecting him consistently. 

Clemson is in a much different position.

Christopher Vizzina has been named the starter after beating out freshman Tait Reynolds. Vizzina is a senior, but he enters Saturday with only one career start.

He has completed 64 of 105 career passes for 596 yards, four touchdowns and one interception in 14 appearances. His only start came against SMU last season, when he completed 29 of 42 passes for 317 yards and three touchdowns in a 35 to 24 Clemson loss. 

There is nothing wrong with Vizzina’s talent.

The difference is experience.

Leavitt has already been through a conference championship race and the College Football Playoff. Vizzina is making career start No. 2.

And he is doing it at night in Tiger Stadium.

Tiger Stadium Should Matter

This will be Clemson’s first trip to Baton Rouge.

The programs played four postseason games at neutral sites before meeting at Clemson last season in their first regular season game on a campus. Now Clemson makes its first visit to LSU. 

LSU has been difficult to beat at home.

Since 2021, LSU is 30 and 5 in Tiger Stadium and 24 and 4 in night games there. 

Clemson knows the environment could become a factor.

Swinney was asked Wednesday about communication between offensive coordinator Chad Morris and Vizzina. He called the expected crowd noise “a concern for sure” and said Clemson has practiced with its speakers turned up so loudly that the program has blown them twice. 

Artificial noise can help prepare a team.

It cannot completely duplicate more than 100,000 people reacting to third and long.

That becomes particularly important because Clemson is breaking in a new starting quarterback and reshuffling its offensive line.

Clemson’s Offensive Line Is a Matchup LSU Can Attack

Clemson entered fall camp replacing four of the five original starters from its 2025 offensive line.

Then this week Swinney was asked what Clemson’s starting five would look like against LSU.

His answer was revealing.

“We need to go play a game and see where we’re at,” Swinney said. 

That is not an ideal situation before facing LSU’s pass rush.

Princewill Umanmielen transferred to LSU after recording 9.0 sacks and 13.0 tackles for loss at Ole Miss last season. He ranked third in the SEC in sacks and earned third team All SEC honors. 

Clemson itself has identified LSU’s pressure as one of the biggest concerns entering the game.

The formula for Blake Baker should be simple.

Stop the run.

Create third and long.

Then make Vizzina deal with Umanmielen and LSU’s other pass rushers while trying to communicate in Tiger Stadium.

If LSU consistently gets Clemson behind the chains, this matchup can turn quickly.

Last Year Gives LSU a Defensive Blueprint

LSU already showed it can make Clemson one dimensional.

Last August, LSU went to Clemson and won 17 to 10.

The most impressive part of that victory was not the final score. It was what LSU’s defense did to Clemson.

Clemson finished with only 261 total yards and 31 rushing yards. The Tigers managed just 13 first downs, went 3 of 13 on third down and converted only two of four fourth down attempts. 

The personnel has changed on both sides, so LSU cannot simply expect the same result.

But the strategy remains sound.

Force Clemson to prove it can run the football.

Clemson’s leading returning rusher from 2025 is sophomore Gideon Davidson, who carried 60 times for 260 yards as a freshman. Clemson has placed greater emphasis on physicality and the running game since Morris returned as offensive coordinator. 

LSU cannot allow that running game to protect Vizzina.

Make the quarterback win the game.

Clemson’s Defensive Tackle Situation Favors LSU

This may be LSU’s best matchup offensively.

Clemson lost Peter Woods and DeMonte Capehart to the NFL and Stephiylan Green transferred to LSU. Clemson’s own spring guide notes that those three players accounted for all 24 regular season starts at defensive tackle in 2025. 

The situation became more difficult during the offseason.

Transfer Kourtney Kelly suffered a torn ACL. Hevin Brown Shuler is expected to miss the season while undergoing treatment for Hodgkin lymphoma. Vic Burley remains suspended with no timetable for his return. 

That leaves Clemson depending heavily on players such as Amare Adams, Markus Strong, Champ Thompson and junior college transfer Andy Burburija.

There is talent there.

There is also uncertainty.

Swinney himself described defensive tackle as a major unknown during camp and said in August that he was still waiting for an “alpha” to emerge at the position. 

Kiffin should test that group immediately.

Run the football between the tackles.

Make Clemson prove it can hold up inside.

Then use play action and Leavitt’s mobility once the linebackers begin committing toward the line of scrimmage.

Clemson Has Dangerous Receivers

LSU cannot treat Clemson’s offense as harmless.

T.J. Moore is a proven receiver who caught 52 passes for a team high 837 yards and four touchdowns last season. Bryant Wesco Jr. is also back after missing half of 2025 with an injury. He enters 2026 with 72 career receptions for 1,245 yards and 11 touchdowns. 

That tandem gives Vizzina legitimate downfield weapons.

It is one reason LSU must generate pressure without constantly exposing the secondary to one on one deep shots.

Clemson wants explosive plays.

LSU’s job is to make Clemson earn everything.

Force long drives. Make Vizzina repeatedly convert third downs. Do not give Moore or Wesco an easy 60 yard touchdown that changes the game.

Clemson Is Having to Guess About Kiffin’s Offense

LSU has one major Week 1 advantage that does not show up on a depth chart.

Clemson does not know exactly what LSU’s offense is going to look like.

Defensive coordinator Tom Allen said this week that he counted 19 new players in LSU’s offensive two deep.

Because of LSU’s roster turnover and Kiffin’s arrival, Allen said he spent extensive time watching film from several different programs instead of simply studying LSU’s 2025 offense.

There is very little useful LSU film showing exactly what Clemson will face Saturday. 

That favors Kiffin.

Clemson has to prepare for concepts from Kiffin’s previous offenses, Charlie Weis Jr.’s work, Leavitt’s Arizona State tape and the skills of an almost entirely reconstructed LSU offense.

Kiffin gets to decide which pieces Clemson sees first.

That uncertainty is a real advantage in a season opener.

Trey’Dez Green Is the Matchup Problem

One LSU weapon Clemson knows plenty about is Trey’Dez Green.

Green enters his junior season with 46 receptions for 534 yards and 11 touchdowns. His 11 touchdown catches are already the LSU career record for a tight end, and he set the school’s single season record for a tight end with seven touchdowns last year.

He was also named a first team AP preseason All American. 

At 6 foot 7, Green gives Kiffin options all over the field.

Put a linebacker on him and LSU can throw over him.

Use a smaller defensive back and Green has the size advantage.

Bring extra defenders down to stop LSU’s running game and Green becomes even more dangerous behind them.

He does not need 10 catches Saturday.

He simply needs Clemson to account for him on every snap.

Clemson’s Defense Will Keep This Competitive Early

This is not a prediction that LSU walks onto the field and scores 40 points without resistance.

Clemson still has good defensive players.

Linebacker Sammy Brown led Clemson with 107 tackles last season. Defensive end Will Heldt returns after recording 15.5 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks. Cornerback Ashton Hampton started all 13 games in 2025. 

That group is good enough to keep Clemson in the game early.

A 10 to 7 or 13 to 7 game in the second quarter would not surprise me.

The question is what happens over four quarters.

That is where LSU’s advantages should begin to show.

How LSU Covers

LSU does not need to score 45 points to cover a spread around 10 points.

The Tigers need to control the way the game is played.

Run at Clemson’s rebuilt defensive interior.

Protect Leavitt.

Make Clemson defend Green in the middle of the field.

Prevent Clemson from establishing an easy running game.

Force Vizzina into obvious passing situations.

Then let the crowd and LSU’s pass rush take over.

The biggest danger for LSU is giving Clemson short fields through turnovers or penalties.

Avoid that and Clemson may have difficulty producing enough sustained offense to keep pace.

Prediction: LSU 31, Clemson 17

Clemson has enough talent to make this uncomfortable for a while.

But the matchup favors LSU.

Leavitt is far more experienced than Clemson’s starting quarterback.

Clemson is still sorting through an offensive line that must deal with LSU’s pass rush.

Its defensive tackle room has suffered major turnover and additional losses.

Clemson’s staff openly admits Tiger Stadium communication is a concern.

And Clemson is preparing for an LSU offense that has almost no relevant film together.

Add the first night of the Lane Kiffin era in Tiger Stadium, and I like LSU to gradually take control after a competitive opening half.

LSU 31, Clemson 17.

LSU wins.

And whether the final line settles at minus 10 or minus 10.5, LSU covers.
