The Lane Kiffin era at LSU begins under the lights in Tiger Stadium, where the No. 11 Tigers will host Clemson tonight in one of the most interesting games of college football’s opening weekend.

Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Central on ABC. LSU enters the season ranked No. 11 in the Associated Press poll and No. 13 in the coaches poll. Clemson is unranked by the AP but ranked No. 23 by the coaches.

Both programs are trying to respond after finishing 7–6 last season. LSU has a new head coach, a new quarterback and a roster reshaped by one of the country’s largest transfer classes. Clemson is replacing several major contributors, including quarterback Cade Klubnik.

The schools met in last season’s opener at Clemson. LSU won 17–10 after Trey’Dez Green caught an eight-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter. LSU now leads the all-time series 4–1.

LSU’s new offense takes center stage

The first question is how quickly Kiffin’s offense will come together in a real game.

LSU has plenty of talent, but talent alone does not guarantee clean football in an opener. Sam Leavitt must manage the offense, communicate through any early confusion and avoid giving Clemson short fields.

Leavitt transferred from Arizona State after starting 20 games and producing a 16–4 record. He enters the season with 4,652 career passing yards, 36 touchdown passes, 816 rushing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns.

His ability to escape pressure could become especially important against Clemson. The Tigers from South Carolina have enough speed in their front seven to create problems if LSU becomes predictable on third down.

Leavitt is returning from the foot injury that ended his 2025 season. He has said he is fully recovered, and all public indications have pointed toward him being ready for the opener. Clemson will still test his movement early. Expect defensive coordinator Tom Allen to make Leavitt prove that he can plant, cut and deliver accurate passes while under pressure.

Kiffin can help him by using quick throws, movement passes and the running game. If Leavitt settles down during the first two possessions, LSU should be able to expand the playbook and attack Clemson vertically.

LSU must establish the running game

Caden Durham and Harlem Berry give LSU two dangerous options in the backfield.

Durham enters his junior season with 1,258 career rushing yards and nine rushing touchdowns. Berry provides another explosive threat who can turn a small opening into a long gain. Together, they give Kiffin the flexibility to change pace without making major substitutions.

Their success will depend on LSU’s reconstructed offensive line. Colorado transfer Jordan Seaton is expected to protect Leavitt’s blind side after starting 22 games at left tackle. Seaton allowed only one sack and five pressures across 561 snaps during the 2025 season, according to LSU’s official biography.

Clemson defensive end Will Heldt is the player LSU must control. Heldt recorded 15½ tackles for loss and 7½ sacks last season. Linebacker Sammy Brown is another major problem. Brown finished 2025 with more than 100 tackles and five sacks.

LSU cannot allow Clemson’s front to control first down. Consistent gains from Durham and Berry would keep the offense out of obvious passing situations and prevent Brown and Heldt from attacking Leavitt without hesitation.

Trey’Dez Green creates LSU’s biggest mismatch

Trey’Dez Green could be the most difficult LSU player for Clemson to defend.

The 6-foot-7 tight end caught 33 passes for 433 yards and seven touchdowns last season. Those seven touchdowns established an LSU single-season record for a tight end. Green also enters tonight with 11 career touchdown receptions, the most by a tight end in program history.

Clemson must decide whether to cover him with a linebacker, a safety or a combination of both. A linebacker could struggle with Green’s size and receiving ability. A smaller defensive back could have trouble handling him near the goal line.

Green already has a history in this matchup. His fourth-quarter touchdown at Clemson last season gave LSU the lead for good.

Kiffin should move Green throughout the formation. He can line up next to the tackle, in the slot or outside against a smaller defender. Watch for LSU to target him on third down and inside the Clemson 20-yard line.

Which LSU receiver becomes Leavitt’s top option?

LSU has several receivers capable of producing, but it does not yet have an established No. 1 target in this offense.

Jayce Brown and Eugene Wilson III are two experienced transfers who should receive early opportunities. Phillip Wright III, Winston Watkins Jr. and Jackson Harris provide additional speed and depth.

The key will be timing with Leavitt. Clemson’s defense will likely challenge LSU’s receivers at the line and force the quarterback to make accurate throws into tight windows. If one receiver wins an early one-on-one matchup, Kiffin could continue attacking that matchup throughout the game.

Explosive passing plays would also prevent Clemson from crowding the line to stop Durham and Berry.

LSU’s defensive front must make Clemson uncomfortable

Clemson quarterback Christopher Vizzina enters the opener with limited starting experience. He has appeared in 14 games but has made only one career start. Vizzina has completed 64 of 105 career passes for 596 yards, four touchdowns and one interception.

Tiger Stadium is a difficult setting for any visiting quarterback. It becomes even harder when that quarterback is working with a restructured offensive line and making only his second college start.

LSU needs to take advantage.

Princewill Umanmielen gives LSU a proven pass rusher on the edge. He recorded nine sacks and 13 tackles for loss at Ole Miss last season. Jordan Ross, Gabriel Reliford, Dominick McKinley and the rest of LSU’s front must prevent Vizzina from becoming comfortable.

The goal should be more than collecting sacks. LSU needs to collapse the pocket, affect Vizzina’s footwork and make him deliver the football before routes fully develop.

Whit Weeks will be central to that plan. The senior linebacker enters the season with 205 career tackles and 16½ tackles for loss. LSU went 6–2 in Weeks’ starts last season and 1–4 when he was unavailable.

His return gives the defense an experienced communicator in the middle. Weeks must diagnose Clemson’s running game, help control the short passing attack and prevent Vizzina from extending drives with safe throws underneath.

Clemson’s offensive impact players

Running back Gideon Davidson is expected to receive a larger role after rushing for 260 yards on 60 carries last season. Clemson will likely try to settle Vizzina by establishing Davidson early.

LSU cannot allow easy five-yard runs on first down. If Clemson stays ahead of the chains, Vizzina will have access to play action and manageable third downs. If LSU forces second-and-long and third-and-long situations, defensive coordinator Blake Baker can become far more aggressive.

Wide receivers T.J. Moore and Bryant Wesco Jr. present the greatest danger downfield. Moore led Clemson with 837 receiving yards last season. Wesco enters the game with 11 career receiving touchdowns.

That creates a strong test for LSU cornerbacks DJ Pickett and PJ Woodland.

Pickett earned Freshman All-America recognition after recording 37 tackles, three interceptions and three pass breakups in 2025. Woodland started all 13 games and finished with nine pass breakups.

LSU led the SEC with 17 interceptions last season while allowing 14 passing touchdowns. That secondary should have opportunities tonight if the pass rush forces Vizzina into rushed decisions.

Third downs and turnovers could decide the game

Opening games often come down to basic execution rather than complicated strategy.

LSU must protect the football, avoid penalties and finish drives with touchdowns. Clemson’s best path to an upset would be forcing turnovers, creating short fields and keeping the game close into the fourth quarter.

The longer Clemson stays within one possession, the more pressure LSU will feel. A fast start would change the entire shape of the game.

LSU should make Vizzina play from behind while dealing with the Tiger Stadium crowd. That means scoring early, winning first down and forcing Clemson away from its preferred offensive plan.

On defense, LSU must tackle well in space. Clemson will likely use quick passes and screens to slow the pass rush. Missed tackles could turn safe throws into explosive plays.

LSU’s late roster decision

LSU submitted a 103-player roster Friday night, leaving two open positions under the 105-player limit.

Tight end Dae’Quan Wright and defensive lineman Zxavian Harris were not placed on the roster for tonight’s game. Both players spent time with NFL organizations after completing the 2025 season at Ole Miss.

Wright signed with the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent. He was later claimed by the Cleveland Browns and then waived. Harris signed with the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent before being waived in August.

A Louisiana state judge issued a preliminary injunction Thursday that temporarily prevented the NCAA and SEC from enforcing eligibility rules that would have kept Wright, Harris and other affected athletes from competing.

However, the legal fight did not end with that ruling. The SEC filed a federal lawsuit involving LSU, Kiffin and university officials. Clemson’s general counsel also warned LSU that using Wright or Harris could violate contractual obligations connected to the game.

LSU ultimately left both players off tonight’s roster. Because Wright and Harris remain enrolled and LSU left two roster positions open, they could potentially be added later. Their status remains unresolved and depends on the continuing legal process.

Former Utah defensive back Blake Cotton also was not included, according to WBRZ.

Defensive end Junior Tuihalamaka is on LSU’s submitted roster. Tuihalamaka declared for the NFL draft after playing at Notre Dame, but he went undrafted and did not sign an NFL contract. That distinction separates his situation from Wright and Harris, who signed professional contracts and participated in NFL training camps.

Tuihalamaka’s presence gives LSU another veteran option on the edge, although being listed on the roster does not guarantee how many snaps he will play tonight.

For LSU, leaving Wright and Harris off the opening roster removes the immediate possibility of SEC punishment or a game-day dispute with Clemson. It also allows the university to preserve its legal options while the larger eligibility case continues.

Final prediction

Clemson has enough defensive talent to make LSU work, especially early. Brown and Heldt can disrupt the running game and create uncomfortable third downs for Leavitt.

The matchup changes if LSU’s offensive line settles in and Leavitt protects the football. LSU has the deeper collection of offensive weapons, the more experienced quarterback and the home-field advantage.

Defensively, the Tigers should be able to pressure Vizzina without sending extra defenders on every passing down. That would allow Pickett, Woodland and LSU’s safeties to stay aggressive against Moore and Wesco.

Clemson can keep the game close by running effectively and avoiding turnovers. LSU can take control by scoring early and forcing an inexperienced quarterback to chase points in Tiger Stadium.

Prediction: LSU 31, Clemson 17.
