No. 5 LSU entered its game with No. 22 Mississippi State back in the elite of college football for the first time since the 2015 season when it reached No. 2 in the nation with a 7-0 start. That team then lost three straight, however, and finished 9-3.
The 2018 Tigers (6-1, 3-1 Southeastern Conference) were the highest ranked one-loss team in the nation in both the USA Today coaches’ poll and the Associated Press media poll last week on the heels of their dominating, 36-16 win over No. 2 Georgia. LSU has never defeated a No. 2 or higher ranked opponent by that much.
