May 27, 2018May 27, 2018 LSU Football Report Billy Cannon still the gold standard at LSU As a junior at LSU in 1958 Cannon earned first-team All-American status and led the Tigers to a national championship. In the late 1950s you were lucky to get one college football game on television. Radio was king in covering college teams in America and LSU had Cannon and the largest radio station in the Deep South in WWL-870. Cannon was not only a star running back for the Tigers, but he was also a standout defensive back and punted and returned punts and kicks.
